A fidget spinner is a type of stress-relieving toy. A basic fidget spinner consists of a bearing in the center of a design made from any of a variety of materials including brass, stainless steel, titanium, copper and plastic. It does not require batteries or electricity.

Squeeze the core, give the blades a flick and they spin. That’s it. With a price between US$3 and $4 and available in all sorts of color schemes, many children can carry around a pocketful.

Rabbis at the Scientific and Technological Institute for Halacha in Jerusalem determined the movement of the spinners does not violate the laws of Shabbat unless the spinner has lights that are triggered by the movement of the spinner.

It is recommended, though, not to bring these fidget spinners to shul, as it can serve as a distraction.
