. If it's temporary or easily removed it's osur derabonon (e.g. cups that turn a color when cold, children's water paints on glass, crayon on metal). Coloring something temporarily is ok when it's very brief and either done without the intention to color (like to pinch a kids cheek and it turns red) or if it's indirect (like glasses that turn dark in sunlight).

Dyeing is only osur deoreisa when it's permanent. If it can only be removed with chemicals it's considered permanent. If the color has no adhesion at all it's not coloring (like spilling juice on a counter), based on this some poskim allow using blush powder

One may not color any material or substance, even liquids (e.g. painting a wall, coloring books, using food coloring for decoration, causing chemicals to change color for testing). Even darkening is tzoveya.

Combing a synthetic fur coat is menapaitz.
Edit/Delete (05-Aug-09)
You may not brush it vigorously since you might pull out some hairs. If a shaitel is completely out of shape you may not comb it (b/c of makeh b'patish).
Edit/Delete (05-Aug-09)
Some say it's problematic to comb a shaitel (real or synthetic) while others allow it, however you may use a brush or widely spaced comb.

v It doesn't apply to live hair or fur since it cannot be spun into thread.

Menapaitz applies to all fibers which one can make fabric-like material (like synthetics, rubber, straw..)
Edit/Delete (05-Aug-09)
Raw wool is entangled so one has to separate the fibers to use the wool. It can be accomplished by beating it with rods (this also removes debris), picking it apart by hand, or combing with an iron toothed comb.

MENAPAITZ (COMBING WOOL)

In addition any usable linen or garment there is a rabbinic prohibition of wetting it, since you might squeeze it out.
Edit/Delete (05-Aug-09)
Since it's impossible to clean a clean garment some poskim allow wetting clean cloth, however it's a dispute what is considered clean, since some say even dust, sweat or fading considers it dirty
Edit/Delete (05-Aug-09)
You may not wet part of the garment unless it's an insignificant part that doesn't disturb anyone.
Edit/Delete (05-Aug-09)
You can't allow clean linens or garments to get wet with a clear, odorless liquid, lest you come to wring it out (with rags and wash cloths, or if it's just moist, or colored or dirty water is ok).
